Chapter Five
Zana
I stared at Rafe, feeling sick to my stomach. My heart was pounding so loudly, it throbbed in my ears. What the Hell was I going to do if he came after me? And he well might. Iâd been fooling him for the past five years. The only thing Rafe hated more than liars was demons. Except there was something⦠strange in his eyes. Not the anger I would have expected.
It looked like pain.
âI donât know about you, but Iâm hungry.â He turned away, then flicked me a glance over one shoulder. âOr did you eat enough tuna?â
âIâve never really been all that fond of tuna.â I grimaced. âThough itâs a Hell of a lot better than Friskies.â
He barked a laugh and headed for the kitchen. I followed him warily and watched him open the refrigerator, emerging with a couple of steaks marinating in a baggie. âYou eat salad?â
âYeah.â So, we really werenât going to fight. I felt tight muscles relax in the base of my neck.
He put down the baggie and grabbed a head of lettuce, cucumbers, bell peppers, and other salad fixings from the fridge. Blowing out a relieved breath, I bent to reach into the cupboard where he kept the potatoes, selecting a pair of fat Idahoes. As I straightened, I saw him looking at me, brows raised. Realizing I was being a bit presumptuous, I clutched the spuds defensively. âThis is usually what you serve with steaks, right?â
âI guess you did pay attention,â he said dryly, apparently referencing the many dates Iâd witnessed over the years.
Feeling driven to explain, I put the potatoes down on the countertop and went to wash my hands at the sink. âFor the record, I didnât spy on you and your girlfriends,â I said. âI mean, once things got⦠I found somewhere else to be.â Curled up on my cat bed in a tight ball, working very hard not to hear anything and cursing my demonically sharp hearing.
He turned to give me his full attention. âWhy spend five years eating Friskies?â
I snorted. âIt wasnât like I got a say in the menu.â
âI mean, why pretend to be a cat at all?â
âI told youâ¦â
âI know what you told me. I also know thereâs more to it than that. You took a Hell of a risk. I could have found out you werenât a cat at any time and killed you. Why did you care whether I had backup or not?â
I picked up a knife and started mechanically chopping the vegetables heâd put on the counter while I tried to figure out what to say. Finally, I told him, âYou made me feel safe. You had an angel. And I have a father who wants to eat me.â
He stared at me a long moment, brows climbing. âJargoth?â
I nodded, not surprised heâd put it together.
Rafe digested that. âSo your mother was a witch who had sex with him in exchange forâ¦?â
âMy mother was a kidnap victim,â I snapped, stung.
A frown drew his gold brows down over that straight Roman nose.
